How are grades assigned in Math at York?

With the exception of AP and ACP/Dual Credit classes, all math classes at York grade assessments on a proficiency scale (see below). Rather than a traditional points system, which focuses on mistakes and does not help students distinguish between a conceptual error and precision or calculation error, our proficiency scales communicate to students where they are on their continuum of learning (basic understanding or more advanced understanding) and how to progress in their learning from one level to the next.

Proficiency Guidelines in Math

10 Highly Proficient

Assessment has no errors and shows evidence of complete understanding of all the objective concepts and skills.

9 Proficient

Assessment shows evidence of complete understanding of all the objective concepts and skills but has minor errors not directly related to the assessed objective.

8 Approaching Proficient

Assessment shows evidence of complete understanding of the basic objective concepts and skills but only partial understanding of the more complex objective concepts and skills..

7 Approaching Proficient

Assessment shows evidence of complete understanding of the basic objective concepts and skills.

6 Approaching Proficient

Assessment shows evidence of partial understanding of the basic objective concepts and skills.

5 Developing

Assessment was completed in good faith but does not show sufficient evidence of understanding of the basic objective concepts and skills.

M Missing

Assessment was not completed or was not completed in good faith.

Unit assessments are also broken down into objectives (typically 3-5 per unit) which identify the major concepts assessed in the unit, as well as a synthesis component, which assesses students’ ability to combine multiple concepts together.

Is it possible to get a B in math?

Yes! All course teams have common, normed rubrics for each objective that outline the necessary evidence for a score of 7, 9, or 10. Scores of 6 or 8 are applied when students clearly demonstrate understanding of some, but not all, the criteria for a score of 7 or 10. (See rubric guidelines above.) A student’s overall score on an assessment is an aggregate of their scores on individual objectives.

For example, the student below took a test on Unit 6, which was broken down into 3 objectives: Polynomial Arithmetic, Graphing Polynomials, and Synthesis of Unit 6 topics. Each standard was scored out of 10 points, but overall this test was worth 30 points in the Gradebook and the student earned a score of 24/30 (80%, B).
