High School History

Introduction and the Early Days

Each page of this website includes miscellaneous York publications, archive images, and a description of the decade. The publications and images were compiled by York library staff with scanned yearbooks courtesy of the Elmhurst History Museum. The descriptions were composed on the occasion of York's centennial by alumna Debbie Linhart nee Leaton (class of 1967). The descriptions are not intended as a complete history of York as it is impossible to adequately reflect 100 years in a few paragraphs. Instead, the people and events included represent the thousands of people and achievements that have been York’s first century. Let these descriptions enhance your appreciation of the legacy that is the foundation of York.

When George Letts, York Principal from 1924-48, saw a boy with his hat on in the school, he would boom, “Take your hat off – THIS IS YORK.” These descriptions and the accompanying images and publications try to impart what he meant: this place and the people who walked (and currently walk) its halls are worthy of your respect. “THIS IS YORK!”
