OVERVIEW OF THE PTA ORGANIZATIONS
The National PTA comprises more than 5 million parents and other concerned adults devoted to the educational success of children and the promotion of parent involvement in schools. PTA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that prides itself on being a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families and communities, and a strong advocate for public education.
Part of the PTA’s mission is to speak on behalf of all children and youth before governmental bodies and other organizations. These advocacy and lobbying measures include mobilizing individuals, local and state units to work with the National PTA in molding specific government programs, policies, and priorities.
The National PTA is a nonpartisan group that works with members of all political parties to enact change. The PTA Takes Action website offers an excellent overview of the PTA’s advocacy efforts. There are also options on their site to sign up to receive information updates in your e-mail to keep you current on Federal Policies and PTA Resolutions.
The Illinois PTA was founded on May 30, 1900, and has since worked diligently to support public schools and to ensure that all children and youth have equal opportunities and access to a quality education. They are a state-wide volunteer organization dedicated solely to the welfare of children and youth in the home, school, and community. The Illinois PTA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is guided by an approved set of bylaws.
The District 205 PTA Council provides an opportunity for the exchange of ideas and information between representatives from all District 205 schools, and ensures that all representatives are updated regularly on important National and Illinois PTA issues.
The District 205 PTA Council is also active in our community. They sponsor an annual community forum with the District 205 Board of Education, organize an annual open house of summer camps available for children, and hold an annual fundraiser to raise funds for scholarships for York High School graduating Seniors.
In addition to our PTA President, Lincoln has two to three additional representatives at the Council level. The Scholarship representative works with other district volunteers to review Scholarship applications from York students and help select the recipients of Scholarship funds; while the Summer Open House representative helps execute the annual open house.
The REACH PTA Council is a sub-group of the District 205 PTA Council. REACH PTA is a parent group dedicated to supporting gifted and talented programs in District 205 and encouraging higher level educational opportunities for all District 205 students. Our board consists of one or two representatives from each elementary and middle school.

PTA: EVERYONE BENEFITS
When you get involved in PTA, the child who benefits the most is your own. And becoming an Officer or a Committee Chairperson in the PTA is an exciting leadership decision!!
Why should you join the Lincoln PTA? Because…
- PTA is the number one voice for parent involvement at schools. It offers a platform for you to bring your ideas to the school. Children succeed when families, schools, and communities work together. PTA helps develop those relationships through resources, programs, and advocacy.
- More than 30 years of research shows that children do better when their parents are involved both at home and at school.
- You can be a role model to your children and your community
- You can hone your skills! Whether it's offering your expertise in your field, or learning a new skill, you have the opportunity to try new things in a supportive and productive environment.
- With your membership, you will get weekly emails and have the opportunity to attend meetings. You will be in the know about everything that is happening at the school.
You can make these outcomes a reality for your child and your school by being involved in PTA.
Everyone benefits from your involvement.
